Potato is one of the few crops not originally native to Turkey. It comes from the Andes Mountains of South America and is considered one of the most important crops that could help address the world’s growing food security challenges. Potatoes were introduced to Turkey about 150 years ago through Russia and the Caucasus into the eastern regions, and about a century ago they also entered the western parts of the country via Europe. Today, potatoes can be grown almost everywhere in Turkey, but they hold particular importance in the Central Anatolia region, where production is especially concentrated.
